Which copy do you like more?

Before I start writing for my clients, I make it a habit to ask them ‘what style do you want?’ Some of them give me perturbed answers like, “What do you mean…what style? I don’t know. Normal style, I guess. What style is there to choose from?” making it sound picking the yellow blouse over the orange raglan tee! But if you’re going to hire a freelance writer to write for you, you have to be clear how you want to address your audience. Who are the people reading your content? How do you want them to perceive you after reading what has been written for your website?

As a freelance writer, you’ve got to develop different styles so that you can change fit it to the client’s needs. If the client wants something fun written, then you can put on the clown hat. If the client wants something professional and mature, then you have to don the suit and tie. Writing involves a lot of imagination as well because you need to imagine writing it to the people who are going to be reading it.

Don’t understand? I don’t blame you. But here are two examples that hits different audiences. Both convey the same message but they are written in completely different styles.

SERIOUS TONE
-Start-

Now, with a more personal and fun way of writing, the readers will find it a little bit more interesting to read. Remember, we’re talking about ‘people’ here. They read these kind of stuff all the time and you need to pull them in with interesting copy that can capture and keep their attention. And bear in mind, people who read on the Internet have very, very, VERY short attention span.

PERSON AND FUN TONE
