Freelance writers to learn how to tune their emotions out

by Marsha Maung

There are many admirable traits in women that I relish having…like the ability to multitask, feel for someone else or endure extreme pain physically and emotionally. But there's something that I admire in men – the ability to completely tune out when required (or not required!).

I write this is I've been through it before and have seen people suffer financially and career-wise when they keep the valve leading up the emotional part of their brain open in business dealings! I do it too, sometimes, guilty as charged but not for a long time now. I've learn my lesson(sssss). *LOL*

If you want to be a freelance writer, you need to keep that door closed. It's plain unprofessional for a freelance writer to get all emotional, burst into tears, sob through the phone, have a screaming match with a client or exchange heated arguments over email. It's business.

A freelance career may be just a freelance thing and you might even be writing only during your free time. But unless you want to get backlash about your unprofessional attitude with your work, you'd better learn how to keep your emotions in check even when things get hot.

A freelance writer is at an advantage, if you think about it. most of the time, we're not face to face with the clients and sometimes they don't even know what their regular freelance writer looks like! This means you have all the time in the world to cool down and think before you react. Like an email that you get. You can shut off the computer, collect your thoughts, figure out a proper response as a freelance writer….switch the computer back on and respond.

Opinion Polls & Market Research

Avoid a confrontation with a client of your freelance writing business….LIKE PLAGUE! If there's to be a confrontation about anything about your freelance writing business, you should always do it in the calmest way possible. In fact, I would rather use the ‘reasoning' or ‘renegotiating' method of solving a problem. I've saved quite a couple of my freelance writing clients this way! I solved the problem and kept the business!

This doesn't mean that you have to keep everything deadpan! That's not what I am saying – you're HUMAN and your client's HUMAN (hopefully), so, feelings are involved. If you deal with the freelance writing business properly, you'll even turn your clients into ‘professional friends' although I don't recommend it. If there's a natural disaster, your clients will call you or email you to see if you're affected and vice versa. And this kind of bonding with a freelance writing client you've never seen before is extremely enriching!

In the freelance world, writing or anything else, keeping your head and your cool is of utmost importance. Take it from me. I've been doing it for nearly a decade.
