Don’t Be Selfish, Share The Love

Everyone’s born to be selfish unless you’re born a little funny…like me. Scientifically, it’s proven that everyone’s got their own defense mechanism which is designed to kick in whenever you’re under threat or potential attack. This self defense system is part of how we react to the outside world and when it does, we become a little selfish.

internet sharing information ideas articlesIn the offline world, this is very apparent in the way a little kid yanks his or her (most of the time, it’s a ‘him’. So I’m biased, so sue me) lollipop away when another kid approaches. In business, if you see a competitor, you might feel the urge to spike his or her drink with rat poison whenever in the same vicinity.

Selfishness is a form of self defense even in the online world
This form of self defense is not uncommon in the online world as well and particularly so, since competition is even more neck-to-neck than it is offline where there are clear boundaries. In an online world, sharing or benefiting your competitors is like feeding his or her kids with abalone while giving your own kids bread and butter.

Sharing your articles, knowledge, information and links benefits businesses in the long run
But let me tell you something about doing business and forming ‘friendships’ and ‘networks’ online – sharing may do some harm to your business in the short term but in the long term, it will bring in more business than you can ever imagine! No, I am serious. In the online world, the more willing you are to share the things that you know, you have or have interest in, the faster it will be before you will start reaping the rewards for it.

Call it delayed gratification, call it karma, whatever. I call it online marketing.

For instance, why do I sit here every single day, typing out one article after another for no money whatsoever, and telling my competitors and sub-competitors, “Hey, you over there! You can use this article that I’ve painfully typed out in your website. Please leave the bio line intact but if you don’t, there’s absolutely nothing I can do about it”.

It’s ridiculous when I write it like that but do you know that ethical and honorable (they’re far and few but they ARE there) website owners and online internet marketers WOULD give you your link back when they use your article or share you stuff with his/her website visitors.

internet marketing sharing ideas puzzleIn fact, let me tell you something else….there was this one person who thought what I wrote was complete rubbish, published my WHOLE article on his (I won’t hide it, it’s a him) website and asked his website readers to ‘judge me’.

And yet, he kept my bioline there…whether the intention was to have people see who this useless writer is or to keep to the bargain of publishing the article AND bio line together, the point is…IT WORKED!

He might not have agreed with what I wrote but he kept his part of the bargain of which I am deeply appreciative of and he also published my comments, so….there you go.

There ARE people, mean creepy losers who would take your hard work and claim it as their own but listen, forget about those maggots. They’re maggots to do those things and let’s focus on sharing our written work with serious and ethical website owners instead.
