It is important to understand the relationship between sleep and weight loss. You may find it hard to drop weight despite a thorough diet plan when you do not ascertain enough sleep. In fact, it has been proven that weight gain can be the direct result of insufficient sleep. Though it has not been studied in deep, there are several hypothesis' why this takes place.
One theory involves Cortisol- one of the many hormones that the human body needs. This one in particular helps to regulate your appetite. Produced by the adrenal gland, Cortislol in combination with adrenaline are part of your body's normal routine of regulation. Each has a role to play in weight loss. Adrenaline works with the fat cell in times of low energy while Cortisol increases the body's efficiency to make glucose (energy) out of proteins. This is one way your body increases energy in stressful events.
In difficult times like physical or emotional distress, your body may release adrenaline and cortisol simultaneously. This can result in the feeling of hunger despite the fact that you aren't. And as we all know, Stressful events can always cause lack of sleep. Thus, less sleep can equal artificial hunger which can lead to weight gain.
Another interesting fact is lack of sleep has been known to lead to depression. Depressed persons are not motivated and become less active. Less activity can lead to weight gain. Yet another way sleep affects weight loss.
A good restful sleep has the ability to de-stress the mind and body. On the contrary lack of sleep tends to cause a constant state of stress. This will cause production of excess cortisol. Cortisol stimulates glucose production which due to its being in excess is converted into fat
