Wake Up!
By Caron MacLane
Feb 23rd, 2008
I have a friend, Michael, who just woke up. Michael woke up in the New Year after "sleeping through" Christmas. His life had been on the line. It was questionable whether he would ever wake up. He woke up from a coma. As I visited him in the hospital, I saw that his coma had been a wake up call. Michael lies in his hospital bed recovering from the operation on a perforated intestine.
Just before this wake up call, he had become absorbed in work. He was being sucked into the busyness of his life. Details had grown out of proportion and had cluttered his life. Michael woke up. He has changed how he eats, turning down the treat that I brought for him. He has changed how he thinks. He is changing his activities and plans. As he recovers use of his body in the confines of the hospital, he has plenty of time to think. Now, he has more clarity. He is clear that he would like to return home to his family. He is clear about changes he is making. He is also clear about his gratitude.
Lance Armstrong and his cancer. Immaculée Ilibagiza, the survivor of the Rwandan holocaust, who lived for three months in a bathroom with seven other women and is now spreading a message of love and compassion throughout the world. My friend and his coma. You and _____? Few people consciously choose a wake up call. Yet those who receive this call invariably are grateful. Grateful for the wake up. Grateful for life. Grateful for who they are. These people live their lives with more clarity, fullness and gratitude after the wake up call. What will your wake up call be?
It can take a wake up call for some people to get clear. Clarity leads to living the life you choose. First, you have to understand your choices. Some lose their choices and dreams as life happens. Some work very diligently to ferret out their choices. The excavation process is work, especially alone. Digging though all the clutter to find the essence of their dream lives. Searching for the dreams that can so easily get lost in the living of life, especially alone. It takes motivation to stay with the process of finding and then living dreams, especially alone. Are you going to wait for your wake up call? Or will you wake yourself up?
Coaching includes uncovering your choices and getting clarity. With clarity you understand where you would like to be, what you would like to be doing and with whom you would like to be doing it. Are you living the life you choose? Today? Or are you waiting for that life to happen? I set a vision for my life. I worked toward that vision. I now love living my vision! Are you living your vision? Many people wait for a challenging situation or a wake up call to do something differently. You? Will it take a wake up call? Your life is waiting.
